TikTok overtook Facebook to become the most downloaded social media app in 2020
According to a study by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, the service for creating and viewing short videos TikTok in 2020 became the most downloaded application among social networks, displacing Facebook Messenger from this place.
“A global survey of app downloads in 2020 shows that TikTok, a Chinese-developed video-sharing app, has topped the list of social media for the first time since the survey began in 2018,” the publication writes.
A year earlier, TikTok ranked fourth. Facebook itself remains in second place, WhatsApp – in third, Instagram climbed to fourth from fifth place, and Facebook Messenger dropped to fifth from first (all of them belong to the American corporation Facebook).
Telegram, in turn, has risen from eighth to the seventh line in the app rating. “As concerns about the privacy of Telegram’s data grew, a messaging app that can delete it also ranked high on the list during the year when the COVID-19 pandemic led to an increase in social media use,” the post said.
Twitter for the year dropped to the tenth place from ninth.
Founded in 2012, ByteDance has transformed TikTok into one of the most popular online apps worldwide, with over 100 million users in the United States alone.
